As a wedding photographer, I often have the pleasure of capturing various celebrations, but photographing a Doljabi, a traditional Korean 1st birthday celebration, at Bushel and a Peck in Columbia, MD was a unique and delightful experience. The setup was absolutely adorable and perfectly aesthetic, making it a joy to photograph.
The color theme for Jordan’s Doljabi was blue, and I fell in love with the decor. Blue themes are my favorite, and they added an elegant and serene touch to the entire event. The decorations were thoughtfully arranged, creating a beautiful and cohesive look that enhanced the overall atmosphere.
Jordan looked absolutely handsome in his traditional Hanbok. His calm demeanor throughout the photoshoot made my job incredibly easy, and he smiled the brightest when his parents kissed his cheeks. It was heartwarming to capture such genuine moments of affection and joy.
Family and friends gathered to celebrate Jordan’s first birthday, and the warmth and hospitality of everyone present were palpable. The sense of community and love was evident, making the celebration even more special. It was a pleasure getting to know Sunny, Winston, Jordan, and their wonderful friends and family.
One of the highlights of the day was the Doljabi ceremony. Traditionally, this part of the celebration involves the birthday child choosing from a selection of objects, which is believed to predict their future interests or career. Jordan’s dad, Winston, playfully shuffled him closer to the objects, making Jordan giggle with delight. When Jordan reached out and picked the red gavel, everyone cheered – we might have a future lawyer in the making! They also set up a table where friends and family could vote for which career Jordan would pick, adding an extra layer of fun and engagement to the event.
Sunny baked a special cake for Jordan’s cake smash, and it was a joy to watch. At first, Jordan was very gentlemanly, carefully picking at the blueberries. But soon enough, he was digging into the cake with gusto, having a great time. The cake smash was a delightful way to end the celebration, filled with laughter and sweet moments.
Photographing Jordan’s Doljabi at Bushel and a Peck in Columbia, MD was a memorable experience. The venue, the decor, and the wonderful people made it a celebration to remember. I am grateful to have been a part of this special day and to have captured the precious moments of Jordan’s first birthday.
