There’s something truly magical about cherry blossom season in Washington, D.C., and this National Arboretum engagement session was such a sweet reminder of why spring is one of my favorite times of year to photograph couples.
When we arrived at the National Arboretum, much of the grounds were closed due to construction. At first, it would have been easy to feel limited by the closures, but one thing I’ve learned as a photographer is that beautiful photographs are rarely about the location alone. They’re about the people and the moments shared there. As we wandered through the open areas together, we stumbled upon the most beautiful cherry blossom tree in full bloom, with a cozy bench nestled beneath its branches. It felt like we had discovered our own little hidden corner of Washington, D.C., and it quickly became the heart of the session.
From the very beginning, these two were completely at ease together. Their connection felt effortless, the kind where laughter comes naturally and quiet moments feel just as meaningful as the big ones. Whether they were sitting together beneath the blossoms, sharing a joke that left them both smiling, or simply enjoying a peaceful moment holding hands, every part of the evening felt genuine and true to who they are.
What I loved most about this session was how fully they embraced the experience. Even with limited access to some of the Arboretum’s landmarks, we focused on the beauty around us and on the joy they found in simply being together. Their connection made every frame feel special and reminded me that the most meaningful photographs often come from the simplest places.
For these two, what started as a session with unexpected limitations turned into an evening filled with laughter, connection, and some truly beautiful memories. And standing beneath that blooming cherry blossom tree, tucked away on a quiet bench, it felt like we had found exactly where we were meant to be.

If you’re planning a Washington, D.C. engagement session during the spring season, the National Arboretum is one of my favorite locations to recommend. The Arboretum offers a quieter experience with beautiful gardens, blooming cherry blossom trees, hidden pathways, and peaceful corners that feel far removed from the city. It’s a wonderful option for couples who want the beauty of the blossoms while also having space to relax, connect, and enjoy the experience together.
